Mapping Internet Traffic Through NSA Warrantless Wiretapping Sites, Professor Andrew Clement
This CFP Birds of a Feather session will be hosted at Public Citizen and will coincide with the Public Citizen Reception. It aims to re-visit the controversial NSA warrantless surveillance program. The discussion will be based on a demonstration of the IXmaps mapping program. IXmaps is designed to make the routing paths of an individual’s internet transactions more legible through Google Earth rendering of traceroute details, such as the router locations and interconnections. In particular, it highlights where one’s packets are likely to have passed through NSA surveillance sites. This mapping tool helps make public the extent of NSA surveillance, allowing an individual to determine which of their personal traffic may be subject to such surveillance. There are approximately 40 court cases challenging this surveillance still pending. This BoF will appeal to those interested in the legal controversies over the NSA program, as well those more generally interested in internet based surveillance.
